Virtual Instruments
PS3300 by Cherry Audio
The PS-3300 is a virtual analog emulation of Korg´s PS-3300 semi-modular hardware (monster) synthesizer released 1977. Available as standalone, AU, VST, VST3 and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.

Technically the PS-3300 contain three independent single VCO synthesizer with 24 voice polyphonic and three monophonic modes.
To our surprise, the PS-3300 is the perfect instrument to learn and understand how many of existing synthesizer are working (Tone generator with ADSR -> Filter -> Modulation).

Cherry Audio has created a very good product information page and you can download a trial version but finally the price is a no-brainer.

Nexus 4 by reFX
Nexus4 is a virtual Instrument available as VST, VST3, AU and AAX for Windows and macOS. Although you can edit sound presets on different level, Nexus 4 is still more a ROM-Player (Rompler) than a Synthesizer as you cannot add, remove or exchange sounds (samples) used within the library sound presets.
But you can save edited library sound presets as user presets.

You can create own sound presets, then including ability to select samples, using either virtual analog or wavetable or a combination of them by loading a predefined "preset template".

The strength of Nexus4 is the very good factory preset library and the huge amount of available chargeable extension packages.

OB-E v2 by GForce Software
Another impressive software emulation of an iconic hardware monster - The Oberheim 8-Voice. Having 8 Sound Expander Modules (SEM) with 2 VCO each and grouped to upper and lower group with 4 SEM per group, the sound output becomes incredible and very unique.

GForce has added senseful modern features for the use in your DAW. OB-E is a available as Standalone, VST, VST3, AU or AAX for Windows and macOS.

You can install a Trial version (6h or 7 days trial period) and you should test before buying. Similar as true for other emulations, this is not an all purpose synthesizer and it need time to learn how to program own sounds.
